7 REASONS TO LOVE YA
September 24, 2008. For a long time, this was a sad day for me. Year after year, I made it a point to come home and be with my mother on this day no matter where I was. After a while, life wouldn't allow me to always share this day with family or even go to the cemetery to speak to my daddy. When I wasn't around family to talk about him or to visit him, I felt like I wasn't doing enough to acknowledge him because I never want him to be forgotten. But who was I kidding? If you EVER met Laster Douglas, that is a meeting that you will always remember. Y'all, my daddy was hella extra.
Today marks seven years that I've lost him in his physical presence, but he continues to live in my heart. There isn't a single day that goes by that I don't think of him and some of the ridiculous stuff that he used to say. I`m pretty sure my dad was a stand up comedian in a previous life. My mother is more of the laid back type. So, that makes me a perfect mix between the two. It`s safe to say that my sense of humor comes from his side of the family. Y'all don't want to be in a room full of Douglas`s. We will light your tail up! No remorse. We will talk about you to your face. I mean, I've even went home crying once. Family or not. Shout out to my cousins.
This is Aintbritfunny`s first year ever since my dad has been gone. So instead of some sappy Facebook post, here`s 7 crazy quotes from my dad:
1. "When we get in these stores, don't touch nothing" - Listen, me and my brothers got this speech every single time before we went in the mall. That means, you break, you buy, don't embarrass me.
2. "Keep your head in them books" - He might of played about a lot of things, but school wasn't one of them. He would also just say it randomly when one of us did something wrong.
3. "I`m gonna take all of your toys, and give them to Slashel" - Now let me explain. Slashel was a fictional character that my dad created in order for me to get somewhere and sit down. He threatened me to tighten up or this chick was getting my toys. I cried. Like, who is Slashel though. What kind of name is that anyway?
4. "When ya grin, ya in" - That scared the devil out of me. I remember hiding in the kitchen one night waiting for him to come down the stairs. He always got me, so this was payback. When he turned on the lights, I jumped out. Y'all, I have never seen my dad look that scared. He calmed himself and said, "Okay, when ya grin, ya in". "That meant, I'm going to get you, watch your back". I didn't sleep that night.
5. "Aw step on that walk" - He stole this one from my grandma but you were probably either looking good or had a crazy walk when you heard this.
6. "I feel sorry for that ole dude" - I`d like to think of myself of as nice-nasty as a child. Depending on the day, I could be nice or nasty. Daddy still dealt with me. However, one day, he heard me slightly cursing out some brotha I was dating and that's when he realized he raised me right. Or wrong. Whatever.
7. "You ain't got no friends, I`m your only friend" - Thanks daddy but I don't want to walk around the mall with you and look at dudes. You not that type of friend.
See, my dad set the bar high for the men that I allow in my life. From the simple things like opening my doors, to buying them nasty ice cream cakes on Valentines day. Why daddy? We never ate them.
I`m sure he`s somewhere looking down on me...
